What is 'American Literature' and how might it be productively understood in the 21st century? This lecture course will on the one hand provide an overview of what has conventionally been understood as 'American literature' from colonization to the present; on the other hand, it will also problematize the term by looking at the interplay of national an transnational constellations, questions of multilingualism, migration, and ethnic diversity, relations between settler society and indigenous populations, etc., and their impact on literary production in the United States.
This course will be taught via zoom in a flipped classroom format. Two consecutive sessions will cover one literary period: the first session of each thematic cluster will be asynchronous - students will be asked to read a brief overview text and a short literary sample (provided on Digicampus) and answer questions in the forum; the zoom lecture in the second session will provide a summary of the crucial issues and developments of the literary period at hand, offer the opportunity to clarify questions on the readings, and work with the students in more detail with/on specific aspects regarding that particular period and assigned literary text.
