The seminar is dedicated to what has been called the "affective turn" in literary, theatrical and cultural studies. We shall therefore inquire manifestations and uses of affect, emotion, feeling and thinking in contemporary British theatre. After a theoretical introduction into various strands of affect theory, we shall discuss the following plays in detail: debbie tucker green, hang; Lucy Prebble, Enron; David Greig, The Suppliant Women; Zinnie Harris, How to Hold Your Breath; Mike Bartlett' Game; Lucy Kirkwood’s The Children.
All theoretical texts and playtexts will be provided for downloading on Digicampus.
COVID-19 notice: The seminar will be taught in a digital format via weekly Zoom-meetings. Eventually — pandemic, incidence rates, and infection protection measures/distancing rules permitting — there will be a block event in consultation with the students.
