Comment/Description

The purpose of this course is to explore Aeschylus‘ Oresteia trilogy -- Agamemnon, Libation Bearers, Eumenides -- and Sophocles‘ three Theban plays – Oedipus the King, Antigone, Oedipus at Colonus. We will seek to come to terms with each play. In addition, we will consider Aristotle’s Poetics, the fundamental text regarding tragedy in the western critical tradition. All texts will be read in English translations, with key passages in Greek also included for discussion. The University of Chicago Press translations of the plays which I plan to use are excellent and inexpensive. The Aristotle is available in numerous translations.
Aeschylus: ISBN 9780226311470
Sophocles: ISBN 9780226311517
There will be two essays required, one on Aeschylus and one on Sophocles.
