Kommentar/Beschreibung

In this course we will explore the haunted houses, woods, and urban spaces of the U.S.-American
imagination. Through our study of mid-19th -Century American Gothic writers, we will
engage the persistent question of why a country that values clarity, freedom, religious purity,
inclusion, and progress, produces literature so often characterized by darkness,
claustrophobia, madness, monstrosity, and haunting. We will start by looking at what constitutes the traditional American "Gothic" mode and genre by reading Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Then, as we move into the late 19th Century and 20th Century, we will focus on one specific context of Gothic fiction—namely, African-American Gothic. To do so, we will read both excerpts from Toni Morrison's "Beloved" and Octavia Butler's "Fledgling." The overall goal of this class is to analzyse which characteristics of the classic Gothic mode do still "haunt" African-American Gothic and how others were adapted to meet the needs of this specific sub-genre.

Studierende der Anglistik/Amerikanistik und des Faches Englisch können sich bereits während der vorgezogenen Anmeldephase zur Sicherstellung des Studienfortschritts für die Aufbau- und Vertiefungsmodule anmelden. Hierzu wird ein gewisses Kontingent der Kursplätze im Zeitraum vom 19.02.2024 bis 28.02.2024 für die Anmeldung geöffnet. Die Verteilung der Plätze erfolgt am 01.03.2024. Bitte beachten Sie, dass in dieser Anmeldephase Studierende in höheren Fachsemestern bei der Verteilung der Plätze priorisiert werden.
Die allgemeine Anmeldephase beginnt am 04.03.2024 und endet am 08.04.2024.
Folgende Regeln gelten für die Anmeldung:
  • Diese Regel gilt von 04.03.2024 08:00 bis 08.04.2024 12:00.
    Die Anmeldung zu maximal 2 Veranstaltungen des Anmeldesets ist erlaubt.
  • Es wird eine festgelegte Anzahl von Plätzen in den Veranstaltungen verteilt.
    Die Plätze in den betreffenden Veranstaltungen wurden am 10.04.2024 um 12:00 verteilt. Weitere Plätze werden evtl. über Wartelisten zur Verfügung gestellt.
  • Die Anmeldung ist möglich von 04.03.2024, 08:00 bis 08.04.2024, 12:00.
