Comment/Description

A well-known school grammar rule is SPO ‘subject-predicate-object’ for the word order of English sentences. But this has not always been the case. If one moves back into history one finds other word orders, which in the end (Old English) are very much like (modern) German word order. In the diachronic perpective, we will look at the different possibilities throughout history and chart how the modern rule, i.e. the fixed word order has evolved. In the comparative perspective, we will investigate the differences between modern English and German word orders, their consequences for usage in the two languages and for German learners of English. Finally, in the stylistic perspective we will find out how English has dealt with the loss of German-style, free and pragmatic word order by finding other means (e.g. cleft sentences).
