Comment/Description

In 1619, twenty captive Africans were brought ashore from a Dutch trading vessel in Jamestown,Virginia, marking the official beginning of what we call African American history. This lecture will offer an introduction to the experi-ence of black women and men in North America from the Colonial Period to the 21st Century. We will discuss the transatlantic slave trade, the rise and fall of the institution of slavery, the failure of Reconstruction as well as the long, hard struggle for black freedom and equality since then. A special focus will be on the black civil rights movement as well as the social, economic and political situation of African Americans since World War II.
