Comment/Description

The Victorian Age, spanning from 1837 to 1901 during Queen Victoria's reign, can be considered a time of metamorphosis. This era experienced profound changes in almost every aspect of society, including technology, culture, politics, and the economy.

The seminar will address industrial metamorphosis (Industrial Revolution, urbanisation, transportation); social and intellectual metamorphosis (science and movements like utilitarianism); political and imperial metamorphosis (political reform, British Empire; gender roles); and artistic and literary metamorphosis (literary innovation; realism; romance).

All the texts the seminar is going to discuss in detail are world famous, students are requested to obtain the Norton critical editions of the following novels:

Studierende der Anglistik/Amerikanistik und des Faches Englisch können sich bereits während der vorgezogenen Anmeldephase zur Sicherstellung des Studienfortschritts für die Aufbau- und Vertiefungsmodule anmelden.
