This course offers a comprehensive introduction to the linguistic study of English, explaining key concepts of language and linguistics in general. In particular, it will cover the description of all components of the English language together with the analytic fields dealing with them, namely linguistic sounds (phonetics and phonology), words (morphology, semantics), grammar (syntax), and language use (pragmatics). Furthermore, an insight into modern and historical variation in language will be provided.
!The lecture is complemented by the Übung Study Skills, which needs to be taken in the same semester. The final exam will cover both lecture and Übung. (N.B.: Obligatoriness depends on your Studiengang.)!
