Comment/Description

This course is an introduction to analyzing self-reflexive video games (metagames). In general, this seminar will examine how video games can be analyzed from gameplay, narrative and thematic perspectives. To do this, we’ll discuss the multimodality of videogames and the techniques they use to steer the player in certain directions on all of these levels. Additionally, we’ll discuss the transmedia framework of metareference, which is the foundation of self-reflexivity in all media but always needs to be adapted to specific use cases. Meta-references create media-awareness and entice reflections on the medium itself and how it works.
After this short introduction to game studies and critical games, we’ll mostly focus on analyzing games. The following games we’ll discuss (however, there might be some changes in the final course)

• The Stanley Parable (selected playthroughs)
• The Beginner’s Guide
• Dr. Langeskov, The Tiger, and The Terribly Cursed Emerald: A Whirlwind Heist
• Pony Island
• The Hex
• Inscryption
• Undertale / Deltarune
