Kommentar/Beschreibung

F.O. Matthiessen's coinage of the term 'American Renaissance' in 1941 is now used to refer to American literary production between 1830 and 1865 as a period of an active implementation of an 'American' literary tradition - the cultural independence following political independence, we might say. Prominent authors included in this - contested - category are for instance Herman Melville, Nathaniel Hawthorne, the Transcendentalists Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Margaret Fuller, as well as Walt Whitman, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and Harriet Beecher Stowe. In this class, we will read select canonical and non-canonical works from this period, asking about their negotiation of concepts of 'Americanness', cultural nation building, and reformism.
Students are asked to please get a copy of Frederick Douglass' Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave (1845), Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlett Letter (1850), and Fanny Fern's Ruth Hall (1854). All texts are available digitally at https://archives.org, but I strongly recommend that you get hard copies for class.
