Fields of study

In 1619, British colonists in Jamestown, Virginia, obtained twenty captive Africans from a Dutch trading vessel to use them as indentured servants; an incident that is generally regarded as the official beginning of African American history and the history of black slavery in North America.
In our seminar, we will look at some of the central sources dealing with this topic, including slave narratives, pro-slavery and abolitionist propaganda, historiographic studies as well as fictional accounts, such as novels and films. We will compare and contrast these different modes of representation of America’s ‚peculiar institution‘, place them into their historic context and discuss the often complex interplay of facts and fiction in this field.
Participants are encouraged to enroll also in the course „Celluloid Chains“: Die Darstellung der Sklaverei im Film“ (Die, 15:45-17:15)
