The United Nations declared 2022 as the International Year of Glass, for celebrating the pivotal role of this material throughout the history of mankind. This course will explore the socio-cultural, ritual, economic, and technological significance of ancient vitreous materials – including glazed steatite, faience, glassy faience, and glass – and will discuss how the use of modern analytical techniques can improve our knowledge on the manufacturing processes, the raw materials, and the provenance of these colorful and fascinating objects.
