Requirement for credit: term paper
In American literature, the city has been a space signifying modernity, progress, or decay; it has been presented as a space to negotiate, rethink, or question the nation and its histories; it has been a space of counter-histories, individual opportunities or loneliness, of spatial constellations in the making and unmaking. In this class, we will look at urban literatures written from Black and Indigenous perspectives, asking not just about the ‘what’ of urban stories but also about the ‘how’, about the ways in which writers narratively and poetically construct and deconstruct the city – from Haryette Mullen’s and Teju Cole’s flanerism in L.A. and New York to Tommy Orange’s multivoiced San Francisco.

Please note that this is a weekend seminar scheduled for December 6-8, 2024, with a preliminary meeting on Nov 7, 5.30 via zoom.

Students are asked to buy Teju Cole’s Open City (2011) and Tommy Orange’s There There (2018) as set texts.
Additional literary as well as theoretical texts will be uploaded on Digicampus by October 13, 2024. Students are expected to have read all texts by the time of the seminar.

Diese Veranstaltung gehört zum Anmeldeset "Beschränkte Teilnehmendenanzahl: Urban Poetics".
Für diesen Kurs werden alle Kursplätze im Zeitraum vom 12.08.2024 bis 28.08.2024 für die Anmeldung geöffnet. Da es sich um ein Blockseminar mit einer Vorbesprechung im September handelt, werden alle Plätze bereits am 30.08.2024 verteilt. Eine Anmeldung während der regulären Anmeldephase ist nicht möglich.
Bitte beachten Sie, dass in der vorgezogenen Anmeldephase Studierende in höheren Fachsemestern bei der Verteilung der Plätze priorisiert werden.
