Natural language has various instruments as to how information can be ‘packaged’ differently in texts through different structures. As an example, the following utterances all describe the same situation – but they evoke somewhat different perceptions:
• ‘The police caught the arsonist.’
• ‘The arsonist was caught by the police.’
• ’It was the arsonist who was caught by the police.‘
• ’It was the police who caught him, the arsonist.‘
In linguistics, the underlying principles regulating this variation are grouped together under the notion of ‘information structure’. Information structure has an effect on how we cognitively process the sentences and how cognitive information processing affects comprehension of the upcoming text.
The seminar will take a closer look at this connection and explore it in greater level of detail. This includes:
• a survey of information structural phenomena in English and beyond
• foundational linguistic concepts in information structure, such as given vs. new information
• reference and anaphoricity
• non-canonical constructions and word order alternation, such as active/passive, (pseudo-)clefts, fronting
• creating and using annotated corpora for linguistic analysis
• quantitative and qualitative approaches on studying information structure
The course serves as an introduction to a central area of linguistics and provides practical instructions on computer-assisted data analysis, which can also be applied to other linguistic projects such as term papers and theses.

Studierende der Anglistik/Amerikanistik und des Faches Englisch können sich bereits während der vorgezogenen Anmeldephase zur Sicherstellung des Studienfortschritts für die Aufbau- und Vertiefungsmodule anmelden. Hierzu wird ein gewisses Kontingent der Kursplätze im Zeitraum vom 24.02.2025 bis 05.03.2025 für die Anmeldung geöffnet. Die Verteilung der Plätze erfolgt am 07.03.2025. Bitte beachten Sie, dass in dieser Anmeldephase Studierende in höheren Fachsemestern bei der Verteilung der Plätze priorisiert werden.
Die allgemeine Anmeldephase beginnt am 10.03.2025 und endet am 14.04.2025.

Students of English and American Studies, as well as those studying English within a teacher-training degree, can register for the advanced and specialization modules during the early registration phase to ensure their academic progress. A certain quota of course places will be made available for registration from the 24th of February , 2025, to the 5th of March, 2025. The allocation of places will take place on the 7th of March, 2025. Please note that during this registration phase, students in higher semesters and M.A. students will be given priority in the allocation process.
The general registration phase begins on the 10th of March, 2025, and ends on the 14th of April, 2025.
Folgende Regeln gelten für die Anmeldung:
  • Folgende Personenkreise werden bei der Platzverteilung bevorzugt:
    • Abschluss ist Master of Arts (1044 Personen)
  • Die Anmeldung ist möglich von 10.03.2025, 12:00 bis 14.04.2025, 12:00.
  • Es wird eine festgelegte Anzahl von Plätzen in den Veranstaltungen verteilt.
    Die Plätze in den betreffenden Veranstaltungen wurden am 16.04.2025 um 12:00 verteilt. Weitere Plätze werden evtl. über Wartelisten zur Verfügung gestellt.
  • Diese Regel gilt von 10.03.2025 12:00 bis 14.04.2025 12:00.
    Die Anmeldung zu maximal 2 Veranstaltungen des Anmeldesets ist erlaubt.
