This supplementary course to the lecture "Introduction to English Linguistics" is composed of two parts: On the one hand, it is meant to put a practical side to concepts and methods introduced in the introductory lecture with a view to the end-of-term exam. In this vein, we will dedicate some of the sessions to questions and discussions concerning the application of some of the central concepts in English linguistics.
On the other hand, it is the aim of this course to provide you with the propaedeutic foundations you will need in order to write good term papers and succeed in your studies of linguistics. Amongst others, we will discuss the following questions:
• Where can I find linguistic research literature and how do I deal with it?
• How do I write a linguistic term paper?
• How do I cite others and how do I present a bibliography in concordance to generally accepted conventions?
