This course explores the features and tendencies of children’s fantasy literature with a view to providing an understanding of one of the liveliest, most light-hearted literary genres. The course will provide an overview of how children’s literature came to be, before endeavouring to dissect some of its common tropes and inner workings. From didactic tendencies such as teaching about one’s rights and obligations, as well as behaviour in a community to the development of fantastic narratives of the self and one’s goals in life. Ostensibly idealistic in its narratives, children’s literature not only delivers exemplary insights into children’s inner worlds, but it also addresses matters of representation, authenticity and self-assertion. These and other characteristics of children’s fantasy literature will be looked at through a series of writings by Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, J.K. Rowling and many others.
