Kommentar/Beschreibung

This course offers students a general understanding of the theoretical, technical, and practical knowledge necessary for active participation in field campaigns, with a particular focus on excavation operations.

The course begins by exploring the rich history of archaeological fieldwork, tracing the evolution of excavation and survey techniques. Students will gain valuable insights into influential figures and landmark excavations that have shaped the field of archaeology. Building on this historical foundation, the course introduces the fundamental principles of geological stratigraphy, pedology, and sedimentology. Students will develop an understanding of soil properties, sedimentary environments, and their crucial roles in site formation and post-depositional processes. Natural processes such as erosion, weathering, and sedimentation, as well as cultural processes resulting from human activities like disturbance, reburial, and artifact manipulation, will be examined.
The course then focuses on the practical tools and techniques employed during archaeological campaigns. Students will engage in hands-on activities to enhance their skills, such as creating Harris Matrix diagrams to analyze stratigraphic relationships. They will learn to identify the color of each layer using the Munsell Soil Color Chart and assess textures of stratigraphic units using the Triangle of Textures. Additionally, students will gain proficiency in accurately documenting stratigraphic characteristics through the use of unit sheets.

Throughout the course, emphasis will be placed on integrating theoretical knowledge with practical application. Students will have the opportunity to develop their analytical abilities and engage in collaborative learning experiences, preparing them for effective contributions to fieldwork operations.
By the end of the course, students will possess a solid understanding of the historical context of archaeological fieldwork, the principles of geological stratigraphy, and the practical skills required for excavation operations. They will be equipped with the necessary tools and knowledge to confidently contribute to field campaigns and make meaningful contributions to interpreting the stratigraphic record.
