Research has shown that the way EFL teachers talk to and with their students in class has an impact on learners’ language acquisition process and learning outcome. Using this correlation as a general starting point in this course, we will explore, discuss, analyze, and reflect upon various ways of optimizing classroom communication and making teacher talk more effective for the benefit of L2 learners.
Course participants will gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between lesson content, teacher talk, classroom interaction, and foreign language learning. They will also acquire the tools which enable them to analyze and reflect on processes of spoken classroom discourse. Among other things, we will focus on selected aspects of classroom discourse to explore in which ways teacher talk can either promote or hinder classroom interaction and language learning. We will, for instance, consider the following questions: What kinds of questions do teachers ask? And how effective are they? How do teachers correct learner errors? What does ‘waiting’ have to do with the quality and quantity of student talk? Do we develop patterns in the way we give content feedback? Classroom phenomena such as learner reticence, teacher echoing, or code-switching will also be critically discussed.
Apart from developing awareness of practical problems teachers face in the EFL classroom, the aim of this course is to improve students’ reflection skills and promote their professional competence as future foreign language teachers. With its main focus on 'reflection on action' rather than 'reflection in action', this course allows students to use classroom-based data (such as lesson transcripts or video recordings) to explore the main characteristics of teacher talk, learner language, and classroom interaction.
