Kommentar/Beschreibung

Stylistics, or ‘literary linguistics’ as it is sometimes called, is the study and analysis of texts;
it is in particular, although not exclusively, the study and analysis of literary texts. The origins
of stylistics go back to the poetics, and especially to the rhetoric, of the ancient classical
world. In ancient rhetoric it is principally the third of the five canons which is of importance
to stylistics. The ancient Greeks called this third canon ‘lexis’, and the Romans referred to it
as ‘elocutio’. We know it today as style (see Wales 2011, p. 372 for more on this). This course introduces students to rhetorical effects that different language styles in fiction can impose on readers (or viewers).
We will take a systematic look at different linguistic "playing fields" that create stylistic effects, ranging from atmosphere, characterisation, cohesion, metaphors, narrators, the use of negation, metaphors, deixis and lexical expressions of stance and tone to pragmatic phenomena such as speech acts, implicatures or politeness. The course will hopefully show students the intrinsic links that exist betweent he study of English/American literature and linguistics and how a systematic use of language styles can give rise to the poetic or literary appeal of storytelling.

Diese Veranstaltung gehört zum Anmeldeset "ESW/ASW: Vertiefungsmodul BA/LA: Ü".
Studierende der Anglistik/Amerikanistik und des Faches Englisch können sich bereits während der vorgezogenen Anmeldephase zur Sicherstellung des Studienfortschritts für die Aufbau- und Vertiefungsmodule anmelden. Hierzu wird ein gewisses Kontingent der Kursplätze im Zeitraum vom 24.02.2025 bis 05.03.2025 für die Anmeldung geöffnet. Die Verteilung der Plätze erfolgt am 07.03.2025. Bitte beachten Sie, dass in dieser Anmeldephase Studierende in höheren Fachsemestern bei der Verteilung der Plätze priorisiert werden.
Die allgemeine Anmeldephase beginnt am 10.03.2025 und endet am 14.04.2025.

Students of English and American Studies, as well as those studying English within a teacher-training degree, can register for the advanced and specialization modules during the early registration phase to ensure their academic progress. A certain quota of course places will be made available for registration from the 24th of February , 2025, to the 5th of March, 2025. The allocation of places will take place on the 7th of March, 2025. Please note that during this registration phase, students in higher semesters and M.A. students will be given priority in the allocation process.
The general registration phase begins on the 10th of March, 2025, and ends on the 14th of April, 2025.
Folgende Regeln gelten für die Anmeldung:
  • Es wird eine festgelegte Anzahl von Plätzen in den Veranstaltungen verteilt.
    Die Plätze in den betreffenden Veranstaltungen wurden am 16.04.2025 um 12:00 verteilt. Weitere Plätze werden evtl. über Wartelisten zur Verfügung gestellt.
  • Diese Regel gilt von 10.03.2025 12:00 bis 14.04.2025 12:00.
    Die Anmeldung zu maximal 2 Veranstaltungen des Anmeldesets ist erlaubt.
  • Die Anmeldung ist möglich von 10.03.2025, 12:00 bis 14.04.2025, 12:00.
