This class explores the topics of Resource usage and Sustainability in the Ancient Mediterranean world. It examines ancient Greek and Roman habits of using and abusing natural resources. Did ancient cultures have the idea of sustainability? Was it similar or different to the way we understand resource usage today? Is a resource something we want, or something we need? In order to answer these and other questions, this course introduces theories and methods used to study resources in our current world.
Sustainability and the study of sustainable resource usage is one of the most researched topics in the world, and these disciplines offer a wealth of new and diverse approaches for studying ancient habits, relationships, and reactions to the use of resources. At the same time, by identifying ancient successes and failures in the use of resources, this course aims to open a dialogue between ancient and modern sustainability. Students are responsible for an in-class presentation and final essay, as well as reading assigned literature.
