The seminar will turn to the characteristics and development of Shakespeare's comedies. The comedies (or rather the plays of Shakespeare that are usually categorised as comedies) are generally identifiable as plays full of fun, irony and dazzling wordplay. They also abound in the carnivalesque, in disguises and mistaken identities, with very convoluted plots that are difficult to follow with very contrived endings.
We shall endeavour to identify major topics and concerns of a selection of these comedies and shall also discuss aesthetic questions related to and emanating from laughter and the genre of comedy.
The seminar will forge a bridge between light comedies of the early phase and later, more mature, yet darker plays and shall therefore study in detail: A Midsummer Night's Dream (1595); Much Ado About Nothing (1598/99); As You Like It (1599); Twelfth Night (1601/2); The Tempest (1610/11).
COVID-19 notice: The seminar will be taught in a digital format via weekly Zoom-meetings. Eventually —pandemic, incidence rates, and infection protection measures/distancing rules permitting — there will be a block event in consultation with the students.
