In the course, we will investigate a broad range of topics, including taboo words, banter, euphemisms and dysphemisms. More precisely, we will look at the various functions of swear words, intra- and intercultural differences in using taboo language and the role of obscenity in censorship. We will not limit the study to a synchronic approach but add a diachronic dimension to make visible historical changes in the items' functions and their common usage. The course will also explore peoples' views about the contextual appropriateness and the perceived strength of taboo expressions.
