Corpus linguistics enables researchers to uncover broad discursive patterns through frequency, statistical significance, and language cluster detection techniques. Discourse analysis, on the other hand, usually involves the in-depth analysis of concordance lines and larger sections of texts (focussing e.g. on rather implicitely realised value judgments, metaphors and cohesive devices). Pairing these two linguistic areas facilitates the analyses of various changing 'discourses' (political, gender, news reporting etc.) that are thought to construct, represent and/or shape objects and concepts in the world outside the text. In the course of this Übung, students are introduced to various discourse analytical approaches as well as to the corpus linguistic tools and methodologies which enable a thorough and, hence, informative analysis of the linguistic data.
Note: As the course's sections build upon (and complement) each other, it is highly advisable to attend the individual sessions.
