News discourse constitutes an interesting register, both because of its wide audience and resulting influence on public opinion / linguistic usage and because it contains many different genres (from the editorial via obituaries to sports news). Its relative stability over a long time also makes it possible to study language and generic change. In this course we will use historical and modern, print and digital, written and spoken news examples to investigate how journalists’ intentions, genre conventions and overall media contexts influence the linguistic forms used in the text.
