Kommentar/Beschreibung

You are invited to come along on this virtual journey to the Roman province of Gallia Narbonensis (modern Provence). This area is known for its well preserved archaeological remains, including the theatre at Orange, the Augustan temple at Nîmes, the water mills and aqueduct at Barbegal, and the cities of Glanum and Vaison-la-Romaine. Through the archaeology we can explore a wide range of topics related to the Roman Empire and its economy, administration, society, and religion. In our journey we will take a closer look at Roman systems of navigation, large scale production centres, and the relationship between Romans and Locals.

As we go on this journey we will be following in the footsteps of countless scholars and explorers who shared their delight and fascination with Provence through their writings. Since the 18th century travel writing has become one of the most popular literary genres. Through journals, travel accounts and guidebooks authors such as Tobias Smollett, Thomas Jefferson, Karl Baedeker and Mark Twain provided useful information and amusement to a worldwide audience. Following this grand tradition, we will be producing our own travel guide to Gallia Narbonensis. With practical lessons on writing for a popular audience and layout design you will gain tools to capture your own knowledge and impressions of the Romans in Provence.

At the end of the winter semester there will be an excursion to Provence organized by Classical Archaeology, when the guidebook produced during the course will be put to good practical use. It should be noted that the excursion and course are separate, so students can participate in either one without having to do the other. However, the combination of course and excursion offers students a wonderful opportunity to learn about the history and archaeology of Gallia Narbonensis and then to explore the
remains in person. The course will be taught online via Zoom meetings. We will follow a bi-weekly schedule that will combine pre-recorded lectures and practicalassignments with online discussion sessions and tutorials on the archaeology and travel guide writing tools. Basic literature will be available online via Digicampus.
