Please note: This course will be held in double sessions and therefore be finished by June 17. All tasks for the portfolio must be submitted by then!
Regular attendance, active participation in class and group assignments.
Participants have to do an oral presentation/guided discussion with a concise handout and present one thesis paragraph (500 words). Furthermore, they have to write one sample analysis (1.000 words) and one short research essay (2.000 words) during the semester. All tasks must be submitted by the last session (June 17), since the lecturer will not be available afterwards. It is absolutely obligatory to discuss each task with the lecturer at least one week beforehand!
Popular Culture deals in its own way with the depiction of bad or evil characters or deeds. Especially comics, mangas and graphic novels stand out since they consist of textual and visual (but not moving) parts of narration. This course will provide you with the necessary tools for analyzing the medium of sequential art as well as basic theories of concepts of evil personified by specific villains. The focus lies primarily on practical approaches and the analysis of certain characters in popular works including "The Walking Dead", "V for Vendetta", "The Dark Knight Returns" and "Deathnote".
In order to analyze the respective villain, it is necessary to look at scenes in which the evil deed is shown. This can get rather violent and cruel, so please make sure you can deal with that before you enroll for this course.
After a short introduction to analyzing sequential art as well as theories of evil, you will practice your skills throughout sample analyses, thesis paragraphs, in-class exercises, discussions and/or response paragraphs.
