Comment/Description

The course will highlight the social, cultural and thus pragmatic aspects of Chaucer’s works. We will focus on the relation of his fictional world to everyday spoken interaction, investigating such aspects as addressing other people, being polite or impolite, or expressing attitudes and emotions. No previous knowledge of Middle English/Chaucer’s language is necessary: we will acquire that as we go along, also with the help of the Harvard Chaucer page.
Edition of Chaucer’s work: Benson, Larry D. 1988. The Riverside Chaucer. 3rd edition. Oxford: OUP.
Harvard site: https://chaucer.fas.harvard.edu/
N.B. on hybrid format: a mix of asychronous (digicampus-based) elements and on-campus sessions (Präsenz), very little zoom if at all.
