Comment/Description

This seminar consists of a theory-based dialectological part and a
descriptive part.
First, we will look at the importance of mechanisms and causes of
language change, which lead to the formation of new dialects and
eventually languages (geographical and sociological aspects are
considered especially).
The second part will then provide an overview of dialectal variation in
the English spoken throughout the British Isles, i.e. regional (London and the Homecounties, The West Country, The Far North, Scotland etc.) and social ( Youth Speech, Working Class Speech etc.).
