Comment/Description

In this exercise, we will look at various pragmatic phenomena that can be classified as ‘figurative’. Figurative language can be characterised as language that goes beyond the literal meaning of linguistic expressions in order to achieve certain effects – and we will see what exactly these effects are. We will look extensively at metaphor, alongside metonymy, irony, hyperbole, and simile, and we will do so through both a theoretical and empirical/experimental lens.
