Comment/Description

This course offers a comprehensive introduction to the linguistic study of English, explaining key concepts of language and linguistics in general. In particular, it will cover the description of all components of the English language together with the analytic fields dealing with them, namely sounds (phonetics and phonology), words (morphology, semantics), grammar (syntax), and language use (pragmatics). Furthermore, an insight into modern and historical variation in language will be provided.
Course book for the lecture: Bernd Kortmann. 2020. English Linguistics: Essentials. 2nd edition. Berlin: J.B. Metzler. - It is recommended that you acquire it.

The lecture is complemented by the Übung Study Skills, which is obligatory for BA Anglistik/Amerikanistik, BA ANIS and Lehramt Gymnasium and needs to be taken in the same semester. The final exam will cover both lecture and Übung.

The lecture is supported by tutorials taught by advanced students, which offer further practice. Participation is highly recommended
