Voraussetzungen Der Workshop richtet sich an Promovierende in der Endphase der Promotion.
Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer, deren Disputationstermin bereits feststeht, werden bei der Vergabe der Workshop-Plätze bevorzugt.
The workshop is geared toward doctoral candidates in their final year.
Preference will be given to doctoral candidates with a scheduled thesis defense.

Sonstiges Dozent: Dr. Malte Engel
Dr. Malte Engel hat Philosophie, Psychologie und Englische Literaturwissenschaft studiert. Von 2007 bis 2010 hat er mit einem Stipendium der Berlin School of Mind and Brain am Lehrstuhl für Ethik an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin promoviert. Die Dissertation ist 2011 unter dem Titel „Kognitive Fähigkeiten als Bedingung moralischer Verantwortung“ bei Königshausen und Neumann in Würzburg erschienen. Er verfügt über mehrjährige Lehrerfahrung im akademischen und außerakademischen Bereich. 2014 hat er sich zum Trainer ausbilden und vom Bundesverband zertifizierter Trainer und Business Coaches (BZTB) zertifizieren lassen.

Kommentar/Beschreibung

In their thesis defense, doctoral students have to present a summary of their research to a board of examiners and then answer critical questions. This course is designed to prepare participants optimally for this situation. In the first part of the course the participants get practical tips for their thesis defense presentation: how to structure the presentation, how to build a sound argument, what language to use, etc.
The second part of the course addresses problems that can occur during the discussion. We look at various types of difficult questions and discuss strategies that the participants can use to respond to them. In the third part, participants get the chance to practice their presentation and to receive feedback from the group and from the trainer.
To participate in the course, doctoral students don't need to have their thesis defense presentation prepared yet, and they don't need to be in the final weeks before the defense. The goal of the course is mainly to help them prepare central elements for the summary of their research that they have to present in the thesis defense, so the course can also be helpful for participants who are still in the writing-phase.
Preference will be given to doctoral candidates who have their thesis defense scheduled.

• The opening of the thesis defense presentation
• How to build a valid and sound argument for the presentation
• How to handle difficult questions
• Presentations from participants and mock-defense
Methods
All contents will be developed interactively, and they will be applied directly to the participants' topics. All participants are given the opportunity to simulate parts of their disputation.

Anmelderegeln

Diese Veranstaltung gehört zum Anmeldeset "Beschränkte Teilnehmendenanzahl: Thesis Defense Training - Dr. Malte Engel - Zielgruppe: R1 (Promovierende in der Endphase der Promotion -PhD students in their final year))".
Folgende Regeln gelten für die Anmeldung:
  • Die Anmeldung ist möglich von 02.03.2026, 08:00 bis 16.06.2026, 08:00.
  • Es wird eine festgelegte Anzahl von Plätzen in den Veranstaltungen verteilt.
    Die Plätze in den betreffenden Veranstaltungen werden am 16.06.2026 um 09:00 verteilt.

Die Auswahl der Teilnehmenden wird nach der Eintragung manuell vorgenommen.
