“It is not easy to speak of love. The words we use to do so are often tortured and can be made incomprehensible by passion and heedlessness. So, how then do we speak of love? How does the poet speak of love? Is the language of love preordained? Should it run to a formula? The formula, perhaps, of formal English speech – syntax in other words? The expression of love surely by-passes such strict rules, and resides in the lips, the eyes, the heart” (Syntax by Carol Ann Duffy) .

Although Carol Ann Duffy might have already found her answer to the questions posed within her poem Syntax, the course will aim to, nonetheless, investigate how we actually talk about love and express love and related sentiments via the English language, be it through songs, spoken language or the written word. Our aim will be to look at a variety of useful linguistic theories and methods for and approaches to analysing “love”. We will, for instance, utilise Conceptual Metaphor Theory to analyse poems and pop songs, we will see how Transitivity Analysis can be used to look at how love and desire are represented in teen novels, and we will apply Speech Act Theory to investigate compliments. This course will furthermore look at texts that are not necessarily love-related, e.g. the language use of pick-up artists. We might furthermore look at cases where “love” turns toxic (Note the metaphor here!).

NOTE: This course might deal with sexually explicit language, if you do not feel comfortable with that, choosing a different course would be best.

Studierende der Anglistik/Amerikanistik und des Faches Englisch können sich bereits während der vorgezogenen Anmeldephase zur Sicherstellung des Studienfortschritts für die Aufbau- und Vertiefungsmodule anmelden. Hierzu wird ein gewisses Kontingent der Kursplätze im Zeitraum vom 12.08.2024 bis 28.08.2024 für die Anmeldung geöffnet. Die Verteilung der Plätze erfolgt am 30.08.2024. Bitte beachten Sie, dass in dieser Anmeldephase Studierende in höheren Fachsemestern bei der Verteilung der Plätze priorisiert werden.
Die allgemeine Anmeldephase beginnt am 02.09.2024 und endet am 07.10.2024.
Folgende Regeln gelten für die Anmeldung:
  • Die Anmeldung ist möglich von 02.09.2024, 08:00 bis 07.10.2024, 12:00.
  • Es wird eine festgelegte Anzahl von Plätzen in den Veranstaltungen verteilt.
    Die Plätze in den betreffenden Veranstaltungen werden am 09.10.2024 um 12:00 verteilt.
  • Diese Regel gilt von 02.09.2024 08:00 bis 07.10.2024 12:00.
    Die Anmeldung zu maximal 1 Veranstaltungen des Anmeldesets ist erlaubt.
