This course aims to give an introduction to Gender and Queer Studies and a brief overview about Gender Theory’s examination of the body. The intention is to develop a deeper understanding of the notion “that ‘the’ body comes in genders” (Butler 2011: III) and the materiality of the body, targeting the entanglement of medicine (respectively medical knowledge) and “unthinkable, abject, unlivable bodies” (Butler 2011: X). The seminar is to be understood as some kind of think-tank, where current debates within the Gender and Queer Studies are explored and (hopefully) held. The idea is to investigate together the (possible) extents and_or limitations of the liaison between the Sociology of Gender and the Sociology of Health. In addition, the class could (and should) be considered as a space to practise the usage of academic English – written as well as spoken.
