Comment/Description

Academic discourse in the strict sense is produced by specialists for specialists, who can be expected to have similar knowledge and outlook. Thus it contains discipline-typical lexis, rather abstract contents and the complex morpho-syntactic features typical of the field (e.g. nominalizations, passives, complex subordination), but lacks basic explanations. However, scientists/academics are also expected to share their knowledge and research findings with the general public. For that they will have to adapt their styles to make the contents easier understandable and to meet expectations. Methods such as telling stories, making things more personal, giving down-to-earth examples and others may play a role here. In this course, we will compare the academic and popular style, with a special focus on the latter. We will look at examples from the natural sciences and history (both often popularized), and in different formats (books, magazines, documentaries).

The course is part of admission "ESW/ASW: Aufbaumodul MA: HS".
Studierende der Anglistik/Amerikanistik und des Faches Englisch können sich bereits während der vorgezogenen Anmeldephase zur Sicherstellung des Studienfortschritts für die Aufbau- und Vertiefungsmodule anmelden. Hierzu wird ein gewisses Kontingent der Kursplätze im Zeitraum vom 20.02.2023 bis 01.03.2023 für die Anmeldung geöffnet. Die Verteilung der Plätze erfolgt am 03.03.2023.
