This is a course for students interested in the world of crime! So, come and join us as forensic trainees to explore the linguistic methods needed to uncover a myriad of real and fictional crime mysteries . As prospective forensic analysts, you will be assigned individual case files, involving linguistic puzzles or legal conundrums to be resolved in teams of two.
Practical work on your case files will take place in the first six successive sessions of the term. Your mission objectives involve (a) closely reading and interpreting relevant linguistic studies, (b) applying existing forensic tools and methods on selective texts, (c) finding the theoretical and practical limitations of your approach and (d) showcasing your results to your fellow students to induce further discussion.
In the second part of the term, each forensic team will introduce the case to the group, explain its analysis, tactics and results.
