Comment/Description

Using the city of Augsburg as an example, this M.A. seminar covers a variety of cultural historic topics such as the role of narratives in the understanding of cities and urban spaces as well as the ways in which different urban narratives can coexist or clash. With the ethnographic and the archaeological approach, we investigate urban culture from two sides using eyewitness reports and material culture as starting points – to discover how different communities and artefacts are transformed into urban culture(s) by different narratives. To explore and understand the city of Augsburg, its diverse cultural narratives as well as historical processes of change, we will also hold seminar sessions at different locations in the city of Augsburg – from museums to other cultural institutions. The course works with an experimental approach and various interdisciplinary methods.
