Kommentar/Beschreibung

This seminar explores Europe’s historical development from the early modern period to the present through the lens of global history and postcolonial studies. Moving beyond Eurocentric narratives, we examine Europe’s entanglements with the wider world—tracing colonialism, trade networks, migration, and cultural exchanges that shaped both European and non-European societies. How has Europe been perceived from an external perspective, both historically and in the present?

Key themes include the global impact of European empires and the ways in which the wider world has shaped concepts of imperialism. What role did non-European actors play in shaping European modernity? How are the legacies of colonialism challenged both globally and within contemporary Europe? In the words of Gayatri Spivak: Can the subaltern speak? What narratives of history, economy, and politics do non-European societies and scholars evoke? We will analyze how global interactions influenced political ideologies, economic structures, and cultural formations, as well as how historical processes such as decolonization and globalization continue to challenge European self-perceptions. Drawing on a diverse range of primary and secondary sources—including historical texts, literature, and theoretical works from postcolonial scholars—students will critically engage with questions of power, belonging, and resistance. The sources analyzed range from Guamán Poma de Ayala’s critical perspectives on the Spanish exploitation and subjugation of the former Inca Empire to contemporary debates on the European Union’s role in global politics. Additional perspectives include those from the Ayutthaya Kingdom (present-day Thailand), the Tokugawa shogunate, the Ethiopian Empire, and colonial Australia, as well as the experiences of migrants to Europe.

This interdisciplinary approach encourages participants to rethink Europe’s place in global history and to engage with alternative narratives that foreground perspectives marginalized in both European scholarship and education systems. This seminar is open to students of European Cultural History and Comparative Literature Studies. Exchange students are especially welcome to participate. The seminar is taught in English.
