Comment/Description

The purpose of this course is to provide you with the tools to ‘read’ gender constructs from our deep prehistoric past to the present day through the observation and analysis of material culture. To do so, you will be trained in using archaeological methods and theory to study and interpret the material traces left by the communities that inhabited our planet from our deepest past to today. Broadening our perspectives both chronologically and geographically to include different gender configurations and the ways in which they changed through time provides us with a unique opportunity to gain a more nuanced understanding of the past. It also allows us to critically assess, and therefore shape, current norms and conceptions of gender and sex.
