The topic of this course relates to the interdisciplinary field of Law and Literature and deals with the depiction of law in literature and film. We will take a closer look at courtroom novels/fiction as a subgenre of crime fiction and analyze in more detail the (medium-specific) depiction of aspects/concepts such as justice and guilt as well as implications of ethnic and regional backgrounds.
We will discuss Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird and David Guterson’s Snow Falling on Cedars. Please make sure to acquire a copy of both books and have them prepared for the respective sessions. A detailed syllabus will be provided in the first session.
