This course will use an interdisciplinary way of analyzing literary works with a reference to the natural sciences and the humanities. How do literary narratives engange in science discourses? How does literature include and discuss topics and issues in the fields of medicine, psychiatry, AI and ALife, Cybernetics, Ecology, Animal Studies etc.? What typical features of representing natural sciences can we detect? Can the natural sciences be transported into poetical language? Can literature transform and create knowledge when it comes to the natural sciences? From “mad scientists” to a clear critique of medicalization and a too positive view on technical and post-human developments, literature and the natural sciences function in a reciprocal way. We will read canonized works of American literature as well as newer forms of (science) fiction combining literature and the sciences.
Shorter texts will be available on digicampus.
