Miscellanea Lecturer: Dr. Iris Köhler

Dr. Iris Köhler is a certified career coach, trainer and experienced scientist. She studied agricultural
sciences at the Technical University of Munich and received her PhD in 2013. After a
postdoctoral stay in the USA and working as coordinator of the graduate school at the
Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research in Leipzig, she founded her own company
"The Scientist Coach" in 2019.

Comment/Description

Data on personnel recruitment shows that most jobs in Germany (31%) are filled via personal contacts. In contrast, the popular internet job boards only contribute to 15% of job placements. However, the importance of a professional network is often underestimated by young scientists and networking is perceived as uncomfortable or stressful. This workshop is designed to create awareness for the importance of networking for young scientists, highlight best practices and provide guidance for planning their own networking activities. A particular focus is on the use of the LinkedIn platform and similar online networks. The following topics will be covered in the workshop:
- Introduction to networking and its importance, including facts and figures on recruitment
- Analysis of own network and networking skills, as well as the evaluation of existing network contacts and strategies
- Matching your networking strategies to personality traits such as introversion and extraversion
- Best practices for expanding your network and increasing your personal visibility, both online and offline
- Using LinkedIn for job searching, creating a meaningful profile and building a powerful network
- Determining the next steps for the targeted use of networking for career development
