This course serves as a basic introduction to the theories and methods applied towards the study of grammar in the field of cognitive linguistics. We shall explore different cognitive schools in the field, such as Langacker's cognitive grammar, Lakoff's Conceptual Metaphor Theory, Filmore's Frame semantics and more recent approaches to construction grammar (Goldberg, Hilpert, etc). The course also seeks to apply the theories as they are used in different subfields in linguistics, such as cognitive stylistics or critical discourse analysis. To this end, students will be encouraged to find out how cognitive methods can be used to explore fictional and non-fictional texts so that the way the texts become effective means of communication and follow particular (aesthetic or persuasive) purposes.
