This course examines a selection of recent TV series as to their depictions of colonial histories and contexts. We will analyze how the representations of both outlaw figures such as pirates or renegades and of explorers and colonial officers as emissaries of the Empire contributes to what has been called colonial nostalgia. Our discussions will address different concepts of colonial and imperial(ist) nostalgia and the question of whether a new form of ‘postcolonial’ nostalgia can be discerned in these popular culture engagements with the colonial past. Students must have watched and have access to the following series throughout the semester: Crossbones (2014), Frontier (S1-3, 2016-2018), Taboo (2017) and The Terror (S1, 2018). Materials for TV analysis and critical readings will be provided via Digicampus.
