Margaret Atwood's 1985 novel The Handmaid's Tale has been adapted across a wide range of media and has received renewed attention since its adaptation into a TV series in 2017. Furthermore, the handmaid outfits inspired by the novel have featured prominently in women's protests across the world. In this course we will examine all major versions of Atwood's narrative – including the 1990 film, the 2019 graphic novel and the opera – against the backdrop of theories of adaptation, transmedia storytelling and storyworld approaches to discern how the literary dystopia of Gilead has inspired artists and protesters alike. In addition, we will discuss how Atwood's 2019 'sequel' The Testaments complicates the narrative of power in Gilead. Finally, the TV adaption of Atwood's 1996 novel Alias Grace will further our theoretical observations. Students must buy and read all three novels and the graphic novel and have access to the movie as well as the two TV series via streaming services or DVD.
