Comment/Description

Following a brief survey of Black British history from the Roman conquest to the Second World War, we will trace 20th-century literary and film histories via a selection of key texts from the so-called Windrush generation and the turn-of-the-century multicultural paradigm to more recent intersectional narratives. Input presentations and discussions accompanying our close analyses of the texts will focus on key events, literary and filmic genres and aesthetics, the problem of ‘labelling’ as well as current debates surrounding representation.
Please order the following novels and make sure to have access to the anthology film series and to read ahead (material listed in order of discussion):
• Sam Selvon, The Lonely Londoners (1956, Penguin Modern Classics edition 2006, ISBN 978-0141188416)
• Small Axe, dir. Steve Mc Queen (2020, all five episodes)
• Zadie Smith, White Teeth (2000, ISBN 978-0140297782)
• Bernardine Evaristo, Girl, Woman, Other (2019, ISBN 978-0241984994)
Further course materials will be made available via Digicampus.
