Comment/Description

The topic of gender continues to be widely discussed within media, politics, and our everyday lives. This seminar aims to explore the intersection of language and gender from a linguistic viewpoint. Thus, we will address questions such as: Do women and men communicate differently? If so, how can these gender differences be accounted for? How might such differences, for instance, be reflective of power structures or the social upbringing of individuals? How do we “perform” or “construct” our gendered identities in interactions?
To do so, we will draw on a number of different studies and investigate a variety of contexts. As discussions on gender can be quite emotionally charged and anecdotal findings are sometimes passed as scientific evidence, we will also critically discuss the studies’ methodologies and research design.
