Kommentar/Beschreibung

The field of ecocriticism became recognized as an area of research in the humanities, in the 1990s with the creation of the Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment (ASLE) in 1992, followed by the appearance of two foundational works: The Ecocriticism Reader: Landmarks in Literary Ecology, edited by Cheryll Glotfelty and Harold Fromm and - significant particularly for American Studies - Lawrence Buell’s The Environmental Imagination: Thoreau, Nature Writing and the Formation of American Culture. In the three decades since then, the field of ecocriticsm has considerably expanded, and, if anything, gained in urgency and relevance as climate change becomes and ever-more present topic of politics, broader public conversations, and finds itself at the center of various literary and filmic works.
In this course we will focus on a number of different focus points of ecocriticism since its inception as a field of research. We will discuss scholarly texts from areas such as eco-feminism, material ecocriticism, posthumanism, and animal studies, as well as considering how different genres (eco-poetry, eco-drama, cli-fi) have used their specific possibilities to represent ecological concerns and themes like climate change.
