Kommentar/Beschreibung

Disease and illness can have a profound impact on lives, families, and individual self-understanding, and it has had significant resonance in American and Canadian literatures. Particularly in the context of the women’s health movement since the late 1960s and 1970s and with the AIDS activism of the 1980s and 1990s, narratives of illness more forcefully became manifest in autobiographical narratives as well, as narratives of disruption, catastrophe, recovery, or reconciliation, but also as activist attempts to counter the cultural image of those affected by disease, illness, and disability. “Narratives of illness and disability,” write Sidonie Smith and Julia Watson, “proffer stories of loss and recovery at the same time that they function as a call for increased funding for research, new modes of treatment, and more visibility for those who have been assigned the cultural status of the unwhole, the grotesque, the uncanny” (Reading Autobiography 142). While there tend to be differences between fictional and autobiographical narratives of illness, with the latter laying claim to the centrality of the individual’s experience as truthful chronicling and witnessing, both fictional and autobiographical narratives of illness function to negotiate what is culturally understood as ‘whole’, ‘healthy’, even ‘normal’, and how afflictions of body, mind, and psyche intersect with other categories of social experience, such as race, gender, sexuality, or age.
In this class, we will look at fictional and autobiographical narratives of illness (prose narratives, drama, film, poetry) with regard to such negotiations of cultural imagery and politics. Focusing on narratives of cancer, HIV/AIDS, dementia and other neurological diseases as primary examples, we will address questions of subject constitution; of cultural and political critique; ethics of narration; and intersectionality.
Students are asked to please get a copy of the following texts: Audre Lorde, The Cancer Journals; Oliver Sacks, A Leg to Stand On; and Tony Kushner, Angels in America. Additional materials will be included in the course package at the beginning of the semester.
