Comment/Description

Environmental communication explores how environmental issues and human interactions with the environment are constructed and negotiated through communication, especially media communication. For example, mass media report about climate change or pollution and thus construct a certain view of the issues. Companies promote environmental activities and values through green marketing and corporate social responsibility campaigns. Communities enable citizens to be involved in participatory decision-making, often supported by online media.

This class will provide an introduction into the fields of environmental communication, for example, the social construction of nature, environmental risks, production of mass media messages about the environment and sustainability, media effects, campaigns, strategic communication and PR, citizen activism, and green marketing/corporate social responsibility campaigns. Approaches from a range of disciplines including communication, environmental studies, sociology, and political science will be discussed and applied in case studies.
