Linguistic pragmatics originally investigated modern spoken and usually interactive data, but has been extended for some time now also to historical data. Topics and features that have been treated in historical pragmatics so far include speech acts, politeness, pragmatic markers, figurative language etc. We will focus on three types of interactive and/or involved contexts and genres, namely letters, drama, and courtroom dialogue, in order to elucidate what these tell us about speech behaviour in the past and to raise awareness both for the advantages and disadvantages of working with such data types.
